Bad and White, on the King's Road.

"See now," Mal offers, "Don't you feel more comfortable on this...oddly yellow road, now that you ain't wearing heels?"

Blanche glares at him a bit.

"I knew zat cobbler was not fixing zem right. Mais non, you kept telling me to be nice to him and now zey are ruined and I am . . . "

She cannot actually bring herself to say barefoot.

Really, what kind of a prince is Mal?

"'ow much furzzer to ze palace?"

"I am a princess. I do not whine," Blanche whines.

Er, we mean, Blanche says in a regal, patient, and long-suffering manner.

It can sound a lot like whining, to the untrained ear.

Just for that, she has decided to stop speaking to him.

"I am not speaking to you," she tells him.

Just so he'll know.

If a thumbs-up is not an insult in Ambergeldar, it is most certainly one in Plumblossomburg.

This completely explains why Perseus, that proud and prolific prince, leaps out of his saddle as he approaches them at a gallop --

Okay, a near-gallop --

Okay, a remarkably brisk trot --

And declaims (loudly), "Unhand that w -- "

This is what comes of practicing lines far, far in advance. Obviously Blanche is not a wench, and yet --

" -- onderfully lovely Princess, you vile fiend!"

Ah yes. There we go.
ordinary_sorts2: (Princess Blanche of France)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-07 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Blanche stares.

And then turns to the new arrival.

Who, she has noticed, both looks a lot more like a prince is supposed to look than Mal does, and has a horse.

Still, Mal was the one who woke her up . . .

"You must pardon 'im. I theenk 'e is under a curse. It makes 'im . . . 'ow you say? . . . grumpy."
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
"How dare you speak to a lady so!"

Perseus does petulant better than grumpy, but in the face of this blackguard he is willing to make every effort to make his displeasure known.

"After stealing her away from her protectors under false pretences."

All the fiends of Hell cannot be worse than this man, this -- this monster.

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-07 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Perseus' jaw almost drops, but only almost.

A Prince must have far better comportment than that.

"You -- you -- you vicious reprobate."

Now where are his court gloves? He'll need just the one to slap this fellow in the face and make proper challenge.

Or maybe his sword . . .

"Come here and face me!"

Seriously, he just had his gloves right here! On his . . . hands.

Heavens, if only his horse will keep still while he frees his left hand from the grip of fine satin and silk.
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-07 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Perseus doesn't notice Mal's staring for quite some time, because he's concentrating very hard on removing his glove.

The blasted thing will always stick on his pinky. It's shameful.

But when he does look up, lifting the glove in the air to offer a menacing slap --

The foul miscreant is too far away to reach.

" . . . . Well?"

Surely he is not about to inconvenience a Prince, is he?
ordinary_sorts2: (Princess Blanche of France)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-07 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Blanche flutters -- in full on proper princess mode -- a few feet away, watching them.

But this is terrible!

They're going to fight!

Over her!

Really, she should stop them . . .

Because they shouldn't fight over her.

Unless, of course, they really want to.
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-09 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Challenge him properly? As if a Prince would ever challenge someone improperly!

Though it would doubtless be more fair to remove himself from his horse, as a likely charger for the miscreant will be difficult to find in these woods.

Perseus gives up on his gloves for a moment, holding his head high as he slides off his horse.

Though now that he's on the ground . . . does he need to pause again to remove his gloves?

"There. Now, sir, I demand satisfaction!"
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-09 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
No sword? Not even a dagger?

What manner of a man is this?

Perseus' perfect brow furrows.

"I suppose fisticuffs would be acceptable."

Though on second thought --

"You will fight with honor, will you not?"

If Mal were a gentleman, Perseus would never need to ask this question. But he is manifestly no such thing, which gives the Prince leave to be indelicate.

Or so he will swear, if anyone asks.
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-09 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Perseus, who had been expecting some sort of formal initiation of a duel, hits the dirt.

Hard.

"You fiend! You truly do have no honor!"

Give him a second to get his legs under him -- and maybe get his wind back -- and Mal will see what a true Prince is capable of!

Any second now.
ordinary_sorts2: (Princess Blanche of France)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's all just too, too terribly shocking!

Blanche faints.

Artistically.

Making sure that her hair fans out around her fashionably and that she lands in a good position to watch the rest of the fight through her eyelashes.
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Princess!"

Perseus' mouth is a little swollen by this point, and he sounds out of breath.

He attempts to disengage from Mal in order to go to his lady's side, to (belatedly) cushion her from the cold, hard ground.

"Look at what you have done, sir!"
ordinary_sorts: (Lord Stefan)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts 2012-02-11 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Mal, this would be the cavalry.

Or, rather, this would be the Commander of the Palace Guard, riding ahead of his Queen to make sure there's no danger on the road.

Lord Stefan takes in the scene in front of him.

"Captain Reynolds, I presume?"
ordinary_sorts2: (Prince Perseus of Plumblossomburg)

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-11 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, are those the dulcet tones of a nobly born man that Perseus hears?

He tears his gaze away from the prone Princess, making a half-hearted effort to leap to his feet.

His knees will not allow it. Cursed pins and needles.

"You, sir. You must arrest this miscreant immediately. He has nefarious plans for the Princess Blanche that may not be permitted to come to fruition."

It might be difficult to understand him through his increasingly fat lip, but Perseus refuses to be daunted!

Much.

"Mal?"

Never mind nobly born -- those would be the less dulcet than concerned tones of a royally born women, dismounting even before one of her guards can get there to assist her, and rushing up to the group on the road.

"Mal," she say, hugging him.

"Oh, thank goodness you're all right.

"You are all right, aren't you?"

[personal profile] ordinary_sorts2 2012-02-11 02:24 am (UTC)(link)

What is the meaning of this?

"Queen Amethyst!"

Is this what a fit of the vapors feels like?

Oh dear.

Perseus spends a moment hoping that, should he fall, he will not topple down onto Princess Blanche.

That indignity -- for either of them -- is not to be borne.

"Cousin Perseus," Amy says.

Well, technically, he's Perry's cousin.

And her brother-in-law.

Royal families are all very related to each other.

"Lord Stefan, would you be so kind as to help our royal cousin get this young lady up out of the road?"

And that taken care of, Amy turns her attention back to Mal.

"I don't know. I came through the door and you weren't there. We were searching the palace when Sir Lionel's note arrived.

"You've been recommended for a knighthood."
kitchen_maid: (Queen of Ambergeldar)

[personal profile] kitchen_maid 2012-02-11 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Amy nods.

"And as Sir Lionel is a knight of the realm, such suggestions must be taken seriously.

"May I offer you a ride back to the palace, Captain Sir Malcolm Reynolds?"

They brought extra horses.

For Mal and his "companion."
